From the website: The BrickHouse Brewery building at the corner of Havens Avenue and Main Street is the oldest commercial building in Patchogue. It was built about 1850 as a dry goods store and operated by John S. Havens until 1914 when it was purchased by James G. Shand. The picture above shows how the building looked as Shands before we purchased the building from the Shand's family in 1995. The Shands operated a hardware store there until about 1990. When we removed several layers of white paint from the building while it was being renovated the old sign on the west side of the building, that you see above, was revealed. We kept the sign in place after an informal poll of village residents showed an overwhelming desire to do that. The building has quite a colorful history. Its foundation is built of ship ballast which was plentiful at the time in this shipbuilding community on Great South Bay. During the Civil War, the building was a stop on the underground railway and escaped slaves were hidden in the basement. Many old time Patchogue residents remember Shands as the kind of store that had everything. Now the BrickHouse Brewery is known as a must stop for fine food and beer.
