In a respectably seedy corner of New York City resides one of the great characters of music, Eddy Lee Ryder, a singer-songwriter whose true-life stories are infinitely more eye-popping than any number of fabricated nonsense you get from some of the pretenders out there. Channelling not only artists such as Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush and Elvis Costello but also the wild 70’s fug of Times Square and 42nd Street bars, Eddy is the conduit through which the charismatic phantoms of yore travel on the way to the 7-11. Small Apartment is her new single, a glimpse at the harrowing contents of her dwelling in a building that is equal parts Chelsea Hotel and Muppet Show Theatre. Eddy Lee Ryder has already enjoyed a musical career which has seen her move from an obsession with Peter Gabriel’s Salisbury Hill to encompass the storyteller worlds of Springsteen, Nicks and, in varying doses, Spinal Tap. Unconventional and never less than utterly enthralling, her previous exploits have seen her filming fake casting calls for men wearing underpants for her videos; plastering Boston with “have you seen Matt the racoon?” posters and being thrown out of the backstage areas of megastars shows (current record: Paul McCartney, twice in the same day). Released as part of a forthcoming 6-track EP, Eddy describes her latest work thus: “I wrote about a world returning to the 70s.The freedom driving across the country and telling stories of interesting and gritty people I met and situations I found myself in. It’s a celebration of the impending apocalypse” Small Apartment is your first glimpse at a surprisingly drunk and glamourous end of the world. Eddy will meet you at the bar.
