PRIME CATCH, a four-month-old restaurant in Rockville Centre, has a name that might have potential customers wondering, is this a steak house with seafood or a fish house with prime meats? The decor offers no clues. The stylish storefront has a Manhattan lounge look in red and black: red walls and banquettes, a high, black ceiling, black chairs, and red votive candles. There is a bar up front in the window, and the lounge atmosphere gains momentum as the night goes on. There are plans for live music on weekends, and in warm weather there will be outdoor dining. As for the menu, the “catch” predominates. Fifteen of the 20 appetizers are seafood, as are two-thirds of the entrees. The chef at Prime Catch is Axell Urrutia, who has cooked at a number of well-regarded Long Island restaurants including Waterzooi Belgian Bistro in Garden City and George Martin and Cannon’s Blackthorn in Rockville Centre. His last post was at the Palm in Manhattan. The restaurant is owned by Al Avci, who is also the owner of Surf ’n’ Turf Mediterranean Grill in Merrick. Our meals confirmed that seafood dishes are not only a majority of the menu, but also the best choices here. Our favorite entree was the whole char-grilled branzino, brushed with olive oil and plenty of garlic. Equally fine was a special of a crisply fried whole striped bass topped with abundant crabmeat.
