Eclectic, Brunch, Breakfast: The Best Spots, Trendy, Vegetarians
Celebrity sightings are not uncommon at this low-key East Hampton cafe where chef-owner Daniel van der Beek's eclectic fare is organic and often creative. When the weather is fine, you'll want to take in the street scene from an outdoor table. Come early for breakfast and you can enjoy the nutty whole-grain pancakes, served with a profusion of fresh fruit, or the zippy Santa Fe omelet with jalapeno peppers, avocado, and a garden-fresh salsa. For lunch, try one of the fine salads or sandwiches. In the evening, the '60s modern dining room (the Jetsons would approve) is frequently the backdrop for live entertainment. The menu includes vegetarian items (tofu and tempeh are used in several preparations), fish and poultry (no red meat here). Desserts are house-made and fine. Be advised that prices can veer out of the moderate "Eats"; category at dinner. Prix-fixe deals off-season and on weeknights offer an economical alternative.
